I wear a Carhartt jacket for cold weather and it works great, cuts the wind and with a sweat shirt under it I stay warm in temps in the 20's. I've been thinking about getting a pair of Carhartt coveralls to wear instead of chaps. I know from wearing the jacket that my legs and crotch would be warm and the bib part will just give a little added protection for my torso. Just need to find a pair of gloves that work as well as the jacket does.
See, now everybody talks about chaps and cold weather. I wear chaps in warm weather too with shorts underneath ( not them eurotrash shorts, levi cutoffs ) on long summer rides. Get where I'm staying awhile, chaps off, shorts are on and it's 100' - I'm comfortable. Leather chaps won't melt on hot pipes and what not either.
I've had the same pair of leather chaps ( made local ) for 18 years, they have never let me down.
I have both leather bibs and chaps. The bibs keep you warmer since it doesn't allow wind through at the waist under your jacket.
With a jacket over them, it looks like you're wearing leather pants.
The chaps are much easier to get in and out of once you get where you're going though.
I wear insulated coveralls when riding to and from work. I work outside, so I'm still dressed for work when I get there.
Another option for cold weather gear is the Tourmaster Overpants. I left this morning in 24 degree weather wearing a T-Shirt and blue jeans under a Tourmaster Transitions II jacket, their overpants, and polartex gauntlet gloves. After my 20 - 25 min commute at 55 mph, my fingers got a bit cool, but other than that I was fine. The overpants are easy to change into and out-of once you reach your destination.
I am heading out to Providence Forge tomorrow morning before nine o'clock. It will most likely be in the low 30's at best. None of these haters will be with me, but my chaps sure will be.

uuuhhmmm? Overalls, or leather chaps? Not sure if that look alone will be tough enough,,,However, it might work with an SOA leather vest...I'm not a slave to fashion...but you can't fail with "assless" chaps, SOA vest and a skull bandana...oh yeah, make sure you make the "potato, potato" sound too, completes the ensemble...Good Luck!!
