Got a 2010 Softail Deluxe. Starts perfectly every time. Sometimes after a long ride we'll make a short stop somewhere for whatever. When I get back on and ready to go I hit the starter and it just turns over rapidly but won't fire. I let it turn for maybe 3 or 4 seconds, then lay off the button. After a second or so, I hit it again and it fires right off. Any ideas?
Sometimes it's the simplest problems we overlook. Have you checked your battery? My HOT was loose after I connected a battery tender pigtail on it and I was having the same issue.
Review your starting sequence. Are you doing something different? This does not sound like a mechanical problem unless it is a fuel pressure thing. Your bike is fuel injected and it takes a few seconds for the ecm to reset and the fuel pump to spool up. I don't know your starting sequence but I am a firm believer that first I power up everything--count to ten then hit the starter. I do this on my motorcycles and in my vehicles. I do that with carb or FI. Too many years of electric fuel pumps and waiting for them to pressure up.
Thanks soft 02. I thought of that too. Although, my wife's Deluxe is identical in year and mileage and services. Hers doesn't do it. I'll run that one by my indy also.

Hey,oldairboater. My starting sequence is identical to my wife's who has the same year, mileage and service on hers. The only thing she does differently from me is she turns the on/off switch at the handlebar off every time she shuts hers down. I leave mine on all the time, so when I start up the bike I only turn the ignition switch on the tank. I always wait till the little speedo light indicator goes out before I start it. My procedure has been the same since we got 'em new in Sept of '09. I've tried waiting as long as 15 seconds and as little as when the light goes out. Puzzling. But, when we stop and I shut it off, sometimes I try to start it right away again and it always fires right up, no problem!
