Default Stupid PennDOT

Well, last fall I changed insurance carriers. February I receive a letter from PennDOT saying that they were going to suspend my registration for 6 months for failing to notify them of new insurance(apparently they are notified when insurance is canceled, but not when it's purchased). I fought and fought, to no avail, even though I HAD insurance the whole time. They said that my suspension starts when they receive my license plate. I sent it in March after I gave up my fruitless battle. Problem was, no bike until september!

Not riding for a season just isn't going to work for me, so I listed my bike on craigslist for sale, or trade for a different bike of a comparable price. I ride a metric 2001 98ci yamaha roadstar, between cruiser and touring. Now I know it may seem like I'm in the wrong place, but I love my bike. It's comfortable, huge super soft seat, huge bags, cruise control, it's like riding my easy chair down the road.

Now this is why I'm here. Guy shoots me an email saying he has a 94 xlh 883 and a 75 xlh1000 that he wants to trade, he wants a bigger bike. Both are in good shape and we're meeting up this weekend. Aside from brand loyalty, will I be as comfortable on these as I was on my lazyboy? Granted, a bike to ride is far better than no bike to ride, but I ride a lot, 300-500 mile trips every other weekend.

Nope. You're trading DOWN, after the RoadStar, in my opinion. 300 to 500 miles on a Sporty is gonna make you sleep good at night! I think a Sporty might be a good bike for you to run down to Exton for an ice cream cone, and back, and that's about it.

By the way, your state rep in Harrisburg might be able to help you out with the insurance. Maybe not. I know they always ask for the Ins Co, and policy number on the registration renewal. Not sure why they'd suspend, though.

Sorry to hear about the Harrisburg SNAFU. This same thing happened with my truck, I fought it through a notary in Boyertown, I never sent the plate in as I thought it best to have a plate and get pulled over since I did have insurance. The state backed down and I was okay in the end.
On the issue with the bike, I had a 93 sporty and went from Pottstown area to Vineland NJ. It about tore me up. The wind and the ride was rough, that and I had to go the sure kill expressway which didnt help.
You are comparing apples to oranges. If you are looking for another lazyboy go for a used tourer. I went with a RoadKing and never looked back. I kind of wish I still had the sporty for short trips but it will kick your *** on 300-400 mile trips.

+1 on this. I have a 102ci Roadstar also along with my Ultra. R* is way better for comfort compared to the Sporty IMO. But I am compairing my R* to my 1100 & 1200 Sportsters I owned in the past.

Now my Ultra.......that's a "lazyboy" ride!

if your license is suspended, you can just get another bike and register it?..i thought that meant you were riding the bus for a while..if that is the case, just give it to a friend and get plates on it, or sign it over, then buy it back for a dollor= new bike..get new plates then ride by the penndot station and flip them off..

Thanks for the input. I know it's apples to oranges, but I've never really tasted the orange, so I'm not sure how far different it is from the apple. I did 10 miles on my fathers 06 sportster when he first got it to make sure everything was working properly(his late-life crysis), and it seemed comfortable enough, but that was the sole extent.

My buddy lives on long beach island in NJ and I head out there a lot to ride the coast for a weekend as often as I can. I figured the 94 sporty would be ok for around town and the 75 with some added comfort features would be ok on the highway, but it seems that it's not the case.

I'm 28, and at my age, with a mortgage and kids, I'm not in a position to buy an ultra yet but someday maybe.

Registration is suspended, not license.

Sportsters are fine bikes and people ride them cross country all the time. Just not as LARGE or plush. Fun bike to ride. I rode mine over 1000 miles to Sturgis one year and it was an easy trip. Don't buy into the bullshit that Sportys are "lesser bikes"

I believe the OP was asking if a Sportster was as comfortable as a R* which is a touring bike. You are correct in that some people ride them cross country if they wanted. For me 200 - 300 miles was all I could take in a days ride. Just not my first pick as a touring bike.
