The maintenance plans are geared to make the dealer money if the customer rides less than 3000 to 3500 miles a year.

I have two Harleys and I put 18000 on them last year. My dealer does not like to see me. His maintenance plan is geared for 2500 miles even though the new bikes have 5000 service interval. So I usually have one being serviced while I am riding the other. It's nice to have a "hot spare". I can put 2500 miles on a bike over a long weekend.

As far as extended warranty, that's a toss up. Only you know your riding style and conditions. If you ride a lot of miles a year the odds are going to increase that something will break. Now this usually does not cover items that need replacing due to normal wear such as brake pads, tires, belts, cam chain shoes, primary chain shoes, etc. But it may depending on the plan.

I only am interested in extending the warranty if it is thru the manufacturer. I don't do third party insurance type plans like Best Buy or CompUSA pushes. But if Dodge or Harley wants to sell me an extention of the original factory warranty that is good at all dealers national or worldwide then I will consider it. A friend had work done for free in Canada this summer on her Fatboy that had the extended warranty. Got out of there for the cost of the hotel rooms and tee shirts.

There is a story around this forum of a person who had the extended warranty and cratered his engine around 100,000 miles or so and got a free rebuild / replacement out of it.

The "beauty" of this plan is that with the extended warranty I also have the preferred customer plan. So... the warranty covers normal stuff that a warranty does and the preferred customer plan covers wearable items.

I think the big think I need to find out is how long can I renew this thing. I mean... in theory... if I can renew this thing for unlimited mileage and the life of the bike... The dang thing SHOULD last forever.
