Has anyone ever heard of getting the bell when you get a new bike? One of the ladies at work told me that she is now going to get me the bell since I got the bike. I guess it is supposed to be to fight off the bike gremlins. Never heard of this until she told me about it.
I'm glad you asked! I recently got a 2002 Heritage and one of the ladies I work with got me a bell. I hung it very low on the bike. Almost can't see it.

RE: Getting the bell???
There are a couple of different stories on the ride bell. Keeping road gremlins at bay, and remembering fallen riders when you polish the bell. They should be received as a gift.I have two on the bike now, and two in reserve. I just can't bring myself to put four on or I'll sound like a wind chime or something, LOL. But I'll lose a bell sooner or later, so I like having a reserve.
I used to think them silly. A friend at work gave me one, and while thankful, still thought it was superstitious mumbo-jumbo. About a month or so later I had a crash. Curve too fast, hit the gravel, down I go. The bike was relatively unscathed. Rode her home in fact. More importantly I was unscathed. I was surrounded by trees, poles, guidewires, etc. I BELIEVE
Asthe paper that came with the one my wife got me said. The bell is supposed to attract the bike gremlins, the tone attracts them but they get trapped in there and eventually the ringing drives them crazy. Once they have been driven crazy by the bell they fall out to make orbecome pot holes in the road.
Hence they should always be mounted where there isn't another part of the bike below it, or the gremlim might fall on the bike and cause damage.
Not much of one to believe in superstision myself, but I like the tradition, so I have a bell on my bike.
don't believe much in superstition, but when i totalled my bike in 2005 i didn't have a bell. just got an 06 superglide and the wife got me a bell. it's hangin below the electrical stuff on the front downtube. better safe than sorry.

Have one on my bike that wife bought me back in 2001 when I got forst bike. It's mounted on the left hand controls where I can see it. I figure after alomst 70K miles since 2001 on 4 different bikes, it definitely hasn't hurt being there. When I bought most recent bike in Sept. 2006, dealer gave me a bell as part of the package. I gave it to girl my wife works with who rides a Honda who didn't have a bell.
