I definitely like the look of them pushed forward. Planning a bump from my 12" minis this winter, maybe with the Carlini bars that arc back towards the rider... lets you achieve the look of pushing them ahead of the fork angle, while still bringing the grips back a bit.

I run the 16" Chubbies on my Heritage, and like you also had them in line with the forks. I just pushed mine forward as far as they would go with the windshield on. They do make me sit straighter and I have no back discomfort; my arms are also straightened out a bit more. I find that I also ride a bit more agressively; go figure...
