No leathers for me anymore. For the last few years I wear HD Road Warrior pants when raining, snowing or very cold. Levis or lined Levis when cold. I have a jacket also & they don't take up as much space & weigh as much.

I'm no expert, but here's what I learned from the pair I bought. Try them on before you buy, or be prepared to pay to have them altered by a tailor who works with leather. Too tight and they'll cut off the circulation, and too loose and they flap in the wind and hurt like hell.

A pocket or two on the outside of the chaps might be a good thing.

Being able to hook the chaps to the bottom of a jacket might help keep the back strap from sliding down.

Lined chaps are a Good Thing - I guess. Mine are unlined, and they're only good down into the low 50s or 40s. A buddy has a lined pair and they keep him warm down into the 30s, he says.

YKK zippers are the greatest.

Like anything else, decide how much you're going to spend, and then spend it. Go cheap, and you'll buy twice. There is always going to be a pair that's cheaper, and some that are more expensive.

My $0.02

Not me. It has to get down in the 30's for me to put them on ... maybe low 40's at least.

I bought chaps about 10 years ago and have only worn them about 8 times. Just really don't like them. If it's cold, I put on insulated underwear on under my jeans. Works just fine.

I have them, but I rarely wear them, unless it's cold and I'm going a long way. I hate that I can't reach my pockets while wearing them. I prefer jeans, long johns and knee length boots for cold weather riding.

I've owned a few pair of chaps but I now have lined leather pants and I think they're much more practical.
I usually wear a pair of longer shorts, or in cooler weather a pair of jeans under the leather pants.
Due to the weight of the leather pants I wear a belt and suspenders to make sure I do not create an incident that may be posted on this website!

What an image! I wear jeans, leggings, and 2 pair of socks under my chaps below 40. Between 40-59 I'll wear jeans and neoprene half chaps. Love em. I also have a lightweight pair of cordura chaps but since I got the half chaps, I don't really wear them. They really do work better with pants on under them, IronAss. lol. But at home they work better without!
