depends on length of the ride. If its only a couple/3 hrs i won't bother, if its an all day/night ride I'll put them on. I've never ran into an issue of it being too hot to wear them. Good for rain though.
I have chaps and trousers and choice was always trousers, especially one time after working on the bike and needed to test it and get gassed up. Decided to wear chaps and noticed on the road folks were looking at me in a kind of strange way and then at the gas station, more of the same. No biggie and when I returned home, wife was waiting on me, laughing with tears. I didn't realize it but I had white jeans on under the chaps which looked exactly like my white boxers. Then I knew why I was getting the look. Betcha I won't do that again.
Only wear 'em in the cold.
Just for the sake of argument, has anyone ever slid down the road with chaps on? The reason I ask is because it would seem that one would obviously do more sliding on their fanny than their legs, which would render chaps nearly useless since they leave your fanny totally exposed.
How 'bout it....

I've never slid down the road (knock on wood) but if I ever do and have on chaps, I'd rather lose skin form my *** only as opposed to my *** and legs.
I think anything that protects any part of my body is better than nothing and therefore, not "useless".
I made the mistake of wearing full leather (jacket & chaps) thought the Utah Salt Flats during high noon on my trip out west 3 weeks ago. Even though I drank a liter & a half of H2O, the black leather absorbed the heat & I couldn't keep up with the H2O intake & dehydrated myself. For me, they now are cold weather & the first level of rain gear. Now if they were to make white leather (or heavy duty textile) chaps to reflect the heat instead of absorbing it...
