Default Warranty

I picked up my bike today, a 2007 Electra Glide Std. During the process of signing
all the paper work I was given the speech about how important it was to use only HD products,
including lubricants. I was told that using other than HD products and changing the oil myself
would void the warranty. Is this true?

This is not by first motorcycle, it's not my first Harley, I think I'm fully capable of changing the
oil and doing minor service work, I've done it before. I can't believe this voids the factory warranty.

I'll read through the warranty info later, even contact the MoCo directly if I have to but I'm sure some of you have been told the same thing and I'm looking forward to hearing you're opinions.

Exactly. Just buy OEM stuff and do the maint yourself. Track the reciepts from your purchases and you're fine.

You were told lies on both accounts.....You can do your own service and use any lube you want as long as it is "approved." The Magnusson-Moss Act has you covered.

Provided the bike is serviced according to the schedule(s) outlined by Harley, it bears no difference where said maintenance is performed. This, coupled with well documented maintenance records and receipts should keep one within the confines of said warranty. At least, this is my understanding of the deal. A dealer (as far as I know) can't MAKE you take them your bike for service. The pivitol factor is that your bike 'is' serviced according to schedule. Maybe I'm wrong on this? But that's how I read it to be......

Do the work yourself , keep records and receipts , I like it better that way . I don't trust any dealer to work on my bike. They can't void your warranty , that's a bunch of BS.

No this isn't true. Most lubricants used in the HD by us do-it-yourselfers, are Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1 and all these oils exceed the HD specification. And to boot the SYN 3 product that they were putting in the transmission wasn't even a transmission oil, I'd like to have seen that one in a court of law.

This is not by first motorcycle, it's not my first Harley, I think I'm fully capable of changing the

You are right in your beliefs, and I have no doubt that you can do your service work, get the HD manual and have fun.

Jeff
Most of us on the forum have heard this line of dribble, but not all of us were told this by the dealers we bought our bikes from. Don't hold it against the dealer, that was more than likely a sales person that told you that, and their service department might be first rate. It's nice when the entire dealer is on the same correct page but sometimes it doesn't happen.

Congratulations on your new bike.
