Default Having speedo issues any ideas

My speedo is not working correctly. When I am doing about 20mph it will show 0. When doing say 60 it might be at 60 somethimes or it will be at around 40. Needless to say it is all over the place.

Bike is a 2006 Heritage and I have no idea what the issue could be.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Any other problems other than the speedo? I had the same thing happen to mine once in combination with turn signals not working properly and real, real low idle. Turned out to be a bad speed sensor.

First being that your battery is 7 yrs old, I would replace it...!
You don't have to buy one from the MoCo... Shop around , a good one will run you
about $80..
Second , pull your speed sensor... From the trans, cover hole on trans with rag or tape!
Then grab some medium grade sandpaper and sand the pick up... You don't need to be aggressive about it. After sanding.. Clean the sensor using MAF cleaner, it wont leave any residue or oils behind, very important! You can get it at any auto parts store.. Before you reinstall , make sure there is no metal shavings or grit on the sensor... If so spray cleaner again... This should take care of it...Once installed see if you can get a buddy to pace you... .. Let me know if this works for you!
I had the same problem and it corrected mine!

Thanks for the info. I have been planning on changing out the battery but I just kept putting it off because the bike starts fine.

Well it isn't the battery. Funny thing is when I had the bike up on the jack to change the battery (no point in bending over if u don't have to) I turn the rear tire backward some and now the needle sitting at just below 12ph sitting still

I had the same problem along with my blinkers going crazy as well. I pulled the ignition switch, cleaned and sanded all the connections and the problem was solved.
