Default Kickstand Problem

Got a 1983 FXRS Low Rider with a kickstand that will not go all the up. Bought a new spring but still the same problem. It hangs down 4 to 5 inches from where it should be. Bought an after market bracket that was supposed fix the problem but it was 3 inches or more too short. Anybody ever have this problem?? Anyone have any ideas? Short of having a custom made part I'm out of ideas.

Are you sure you have the right spring? Is it oriented properly? Did you hit a curb, when did this happen? It just seems too simple. Worst case, just tie the stand to the frame and lean the bike on a post, just kidding. Can you take a picture? I have done a few of these and if the spring went on easy you did it wrong, PITA. Good luck, Last shove fxr, cool bike.

Find an Indy near U and have them check her out..

Maybe something is bent on the bracket or frame.

Default Kickstand Problem

Thanks everyone for your quick reply to my problem, I appreciate it.
The stand is definitly not bent, that was the first thing checked. Bought 2 different springs from 2 local dealers. Different part numbers but sure looked like the same spring. Installed every way possible, still doesn't work right. The local Indy shop is where the bracket came from that didn't fit at all. I did hear that I need to release the left side motor mount to see the pin in the stand, it may be worn in the frame and could possibly need a sleeve or maybe a bit of weld to make the pin fit better. This probably caused by age and years of use. I'll check it out...

Sounds like the stand is binding. Put the bike on a lift and then check what's stopping the stand. Also, make sure the pivot is lubricated.

I was going to tell you to put it on a stand, take the spring loose, and check the pivot. Decided that if you hadn't already did this then you are in over head. Take it to a good experienced motorcycle mechanic. If you are having this much trouble with a kickstand than you need a more experienced set of eyes.
