totally new here so I hope this is an appropriate topic. Sorry if not!
I am Australian and was hoping to do a world tour on HD's with a friend.
The idea was to start on the west coast and travel to the east before heading to the UK.
I have recently been told that non US citizens cannot purchase a bike or obtain registration in the US.
Can someone verify this for me please. Does seem ridiculous to buy the bikes here just to ship to the US.
There are at least 150,000 illegals in the US with cars...
Maybe you could hook up with one of those guys from south of the border, and get a bike 'on loan'.
It's still early here, 6:30 Am, I'm sure somebody will be on in a bit that can call the DMV for you. Sounds like a great trip. Wish I could ride with ya's!

Everything is so easy when its done illegally
Will only be a great trip with bikes..lol...you never know!! Maybe we can get a few miles up somewhere together!
Thanks for ya reply
I looked for an email address for the DMV but lucked out
Cant help with the US buying question, but when you get to Europe head down to Switzerland and I'll take ya for a killer alpine tour.
Switzerland is on the route. I am looking forward to some of those brilliant mountain cruises!!....Italy, Switzerland, Austria, then for some layback play time in some of the slovak countries.

you will need something like this too
AIG International Services offers short term auto insurance for tourists in the U.S. The car would have to be licensed and registered in their name in the U.S. You can call them at 877-708-6995 or visit their website at www.aig-is.com.
I don't think it's illegal for a non-resident to purchase a bike. The problem would be that most states require a motorcycle endorsement in order to operate one. I would think that if you have something similar from Oz that it would apply. I have heard of other Aussies riding in the US. Not sure of the conditions. Try searching our database for such information. I know that I can go to Australia or New Zealand and rent a Harley. Don't know why you can't do the same here.
About 20 years ago I was contacted by an Aussie that was going to purchase a motorhome in California and then cross the states and sell it on the east coast. Met up with them here in Wisconsin but didn't hear from him afterwards.

As long as you have an international drivers license, you should be able to buy a motorcycle here. Registering it may be a problem if you don't have a U.S. residence but I would suggest calling or emailing a Secretary of States or DMV office, depending on what they're called, in the state you plan on buying the bike and asking them. I'd guess they can issue a temporary plate.

International drivers license is not required in the USA if it is in English. Will be needed in non-english countries though, so you better have it anyways.
Plenty of foreigners buy new cars and pickup trucks in the US to tour the country and a lot of them ship them home when they are done here. Dont see why buying a harley would be any different. I just don't know the procedure to get it done. I'll be following this thread.
Should be made a sticky!
It might not hurt to contact a dealer that you consider buying from. They will have or get the info you need, especially if they smell a sale of 2 bikes.
You should have no problem. I have friends in Mexico that have bought bikes in the USA and then taken them to Mexico. You buy the bike and tell them it's for export (so you don't pay the sales tax). Once you show them a valid driver's license and proof of insurance, they will give you a 30 day temporary tag. Ride the bike from the west coast to the east coast and ship the bike to Europe.
