The height of your windshield should also depend on whether or not you wear a full face helmet as well. If you do, I suggest you get a windshield that you are not looking "through", but over, because it forces you to look through two water covered surfaces if you've got one that you look through vs. over.

Its all about what you like. I look over my W/S. The wife looks through Her W/S.

I've cut down a couple of shields. I'll mark out the curve with a sharpy, check, measure, see if the curve looks good and study before I cut. I bypass all the tape on the W/S and just mask the metal foot of the jigsaw. Use a fine tooth blade and a slow speed and don't be in a hurry.

The top of the w/s should be a few inches below your line of sight. This still protects you as the wind blows rain, bugs and debris UP and over your head.

The video shows the entire w/s covered in tape--not necessary. Just mask off where the saw base will ride. If you don't mask it, chips will get under the saw base and scratch the w/s.

I recently went through this exercise as well. Honestly I rode several times with the stock 12" clear windshield (EGC) and had no issues, but then I hadn't been caught in a bad rain. The argument for being able to look over the shield was compelling to me so I replaced my stocker with a LRS 9" light tint recurve and I can see over it, though I have to straighten up to get a really good view...might have to take another inch off. I wanted to start with the 9" because the really short ones look goofy to me, especially on a tour pak bike.

Anyhow, my only question looking at cutting the shield down is why not cut it off the bottom? Guys have told me they've done it before and it seems like it'd be way easier?

We're talking about windshields. You're talking about fairings.

not sure it makes any difference in the context of this discussion? Translucent parts mounted on the front of the bike that you look over or through?

Cutting the bottom off of a w/s raises the bottom...ONLY.

The mounting hardware is attached to the lower half of the shield. Cutting the bottom wouldn't have any effect on lowering the height and would allow all kinds of wind buffeting.

If the shield can be mounted lower, there is no reason to cut it. People cutting them, have their shields mounted as low as they can and it's still too tall.

My apologies; I see now that your comment about the EG windshield vs. RK windshield was made in response to my "why cut the top" question. Yes, obviously you'd have to cut the top on the RK. The Batwing shield you could cut either way, I suppose but the bottom would be easier.

sorry for any confusion,

Dave

As long as your shield had straight sides near the base and high enough to make cutting a difference, you could cut the bottom on a batwing/Road Glide fairing shield.
Otherwise you'd end up with it being narrower after the cut than the lip it attaches to the fairing.
