the search for the perfect helmet continues. before people talk about german helmet being unpatriotic, i chose german the shape of it helps block the bright texas sun. but what company makes the smallest DOT shell?
BTW, the draw to ride without a helmet is huge in texas. i see 1 maybe 2 out of every 10 riders with a helmet. but i promised my mother. to me, that matters more than any law
That's a tough one. I haven't seen any low profile german style helmets. If they had em I'd buy one too. I know two places you can get the smallest half shell helmet out there though. Jarz performance and Akoury. Smallest DOT's you'll find. Pretty much the same helmet except for the buckle.
Yup was wondering the same thing, I tend to see a lot of german helmets around here but they are always going the other direction. Hmmm but a good question.
The AK-88 isn't a German-style helmet, but I'm pretty sure that it's the smallest DOT approved helmet out there. There's a whole thread about it on the forum with nothing but rave reviews. I bought one and when 2 of my buddies saw it, they ordered them for themselves. The one guy had never worn a helmet because of the size and bubble-head look, but he's thrilled with the AK-88.
Schuberth makes some small light German DOT helmets, I have a Neon Orange C3 Pro I purchased direct from Germany.

My-bad, you meant a German Goose-Stepping DOT helmet

For anyone who's interested, or curious, how the AK88 compares the the Jarz Performance helmet (I have the Jarz), it's the exact same helmet other than the buckle. The Jarz came with D rings, and the AK 88 comes with a ratchet buckle system (which I personally like better). A friend of mine just bought the AK 88 and we compared with my Jarz. Same exact size....but the AK 88 is less expensive by about $30. Had I known about the AK 88 back when I bought my Jarz I would have went with it. Also, use the size chart...it's accurate. He normally wears a XL but a Large fits him well.
By the way. To the OP. If you cannot find a low profile german DOT you may want to consider the carbon fiber german helmets Skull Crushers has. Better than regular brain buckets but maybe not as good as DOT....some will argue that though.
i looked at skull crush. they seem to have great materials. kevlar/carbon fiber, memory foam. cant believe they aren't dot approved. are those standards still relevant? have they updated the laws to reflect new advances. or do they just go by how much padding?
Not sure what all the DOT standards are. Pretty sure one of them is the thickness of the foam padding. As far as safety goes, it's arguable if the DOT helmets are any safer than the Carbon Fiber Skull Crush. Legally, it's a crap shoot whether any cop will ticket you for it. I'd say most of the time they won't. I know guys who've been riding years with brain buckets and have never been pulled over for it.
