I use a small padlock. I put the helmet on my right mirror, hasp through d-ring and then around the brake lever. The hasp is small enough to not slide past the ball end of the lever.
I do have a cable lock, but that is in my saddle bag and I don't always have the bags on.
The padlock is small and stays in my jacket top pocket. Not undefeatable, but stops quick ****** and grabs by random zombies.
Also, like having my helmet top up on the mirror, helmet won't get soaked inside if there is rain.

I have a $250 helmet too. I generally carry it around like a woman's purse with my gloves in it. Now it is getting dinged up and I have sweated in it quite a bit I am thinking maybe no one would want it so much.

I have the neck-strap latching system HD dealer sells instead of the double-D most helmets come with and the straps are zip-locked inside a 1" piece of shrink-wrap tube (Home Depot) so this creates a nice neck strap that has very soft edges and securely latches keeping the helmet snug on my head (even at 100+ mph)... never looses over time. I stop for dinner I park the bike where I can see it (usually) and now I just latch the helmet over the mirror and left handlebar. They would need to fiddle with the latch to get it off and that bit of time might un-nerve them I am thinking. Haven't lost it yet.

Put mine on the seat. I can't imagine spending 600 bucks on a helmet. That will buy some chrome.

Not everyone steals to use it themselves. Some are just a__holes who want to take your things away. It's like everything else that's easy to carry, you have to evaluate the area your in and consider the risk. I rarely leave my helmet loose but don't think twice about leaving a couple hundred dollars worth of gear in a saddlebag that doesn't lock. Go figure.

I do something similar. I put one of the Harley locks (45732-86 Universal Mount Helmet Lock $19) on the top of my engine guard near the frame. The helmet hangs on the backside. I use a Shoei and DO NOT want to buy another just yet. I carry the key on my fob with the barrel key.

One overlooked aspect of locking your helmet, for those who care, is that a locked helmet cannot be knocked off by a passerby or the wind.

My wife straps her helmet to the luggage rack to prevent dropping although it's not locked.

Works Great
I have something similar to this. It works well as long as you can find a secure place that it'll fit around. Mine looks narrower. It won't fit around the frame or handlebars.

I usually hang it off the bars, but I'm always afraid someone might spit in it.

Or, less maliciously, it can get rained in or a bird can take a crap in it. That's why I put mine right side up on the mirror.

LOL! I know a guy whose helmet was stolen off his bike. No great loss, it was old and cheap. He decided to just ride to a nearby shop and buy a new one (LA is helmet-mandatory state). On the way to the shop, he got stopped and ticketed for no helmet! Plus, the cop (obviously) wouldn't let him leave on the bike, so he had to call a buddy to bring him a helmet. So the a-hole who stole the helmet cost him a new helmet plus the fine. <g>

But I still just put the helmet on the sissybar.
