Please also remember that when riding in a group, use your brakes. It is very easy to slow down quickly by downshifting and using the engine to slow you down. But you're not letting those behind you know that you ARE slowing down when you do that. Slow down however you want, but put some pressure on the brakes to let those behind you know.
The rider that was seriously hurt has been placed in a medically induced coma and is now in stable condition. He has a very serious head injury. I don't know what the prognosis is for him in the future. I have heard that he was riding on a permit and broke at least 2 laws. No helmet and carrying a passenger.
I think people underestimate the difficulty of riding 2up. Only experienced riders should carry a passenger.
On this thread (https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...limited-3.html) the OP says he hasn't ridden for 20 years, and feels nervous with the low speed handling of his Ultra Limited. But he has no apprehension about riding 2up, in the mountains, in NY. First time he has to make a panic stop, he "will have to lay it down."
I hope he makes it through this. I'm sorry something so happy and fun turned out to be terrible. I hope you're able to enjoy this season of riding after this all calms down. Tonight, when it's all quiet here on my front porch, I'll think positive healing thoughts for those who were injured.
I agree, ride with those you know. Ride within your skill limits.
Personally I avoid group rides. I go to the start, hang out and pay to enter the ride then ride home or to the finish on my own if there is a dinner or gathering. Too many variables.I don't understand the necessity for a large group ride. or worse bar hopping poker run for charity. Just give.
I can't believe all of you azzhats trying to tell others what to wear or not. This thread is not about you or your nanny state that needs someone to tell them what to do. I'm sorry for the people that are hurt and for the ones that witnessed it. To all others it dangerous to get out of bed, you might fall and hit your head on the corner of your dresser. Should we wear a helmet to bed?
Prayers for the injured. Now this accident is rider error on someones part, speed inexperience, riding to close, alcohol?Wasn't there but clearly a incident that could have been avoided if everyone pays attention and rides his own ride. Helmet only comes into play after the fact and is never considered until after the fact like the helmet could prevent it.NO paying attention avoids it and makes the helmet a non issue worn or not worn.Ride Often,Ride Safe,Mike

Yes, I feel bad for any rider that gets hurt, but have no sympathy for those that ride with out gear.
There are those who have no sympathy for those who ride a motorcycle.
Where do you draw the line ?
Everybody's line is in a different place.
I'd much rather hang out with a person who doesn't want to wear a helmet than a judgemental person. And what about people in cars who don't wear helmets or seatbelts ?
Prayers sent to all who need them. Those that were injured and those who believe they should judge other's freedoms.
