Too many ride on a perpetual learners permit while taking to the freeways, night riding, 2 up etc. While if your state allows riding without a helmet it really is none of your business, riding without passing a test is a big deal. Too many stay on the learner's permit and aim their bike up and down the road without feeling the need to display the basics. It is sad that group rides probably should start checking for full mc endorsements to keep others safe.
Prayers sent. Group rides are no different than regular riding. Keep a safe distance at all times.
This^^
But unfortunately, people get that pack mentality and want to stay in a close staggered formation. If everyone else is doing it and it looks cool, maybe I should be doing it too? That coupled with unkown experience of other riders can be a dangerous situation. I've seen it first hand and that's why I like to stay to the rear on the rare occasion I go on group rides with unkown riders. I've seen the guys that paddle walk their bikes until they get up to speed, use their feet to brake, pull the clutch and coast through turns, as well as any other bad habit you can imagine.
It's just not smart to put your life in someone elses hands when you have no idea whether or not they know what they're doing.
Very sorry to hear this unfortunate event. Prayers sent.
This strikes close to home because it could have been me and my wife in a pile up. A retard I used to ride with would randomly slam his brakes on while going down the highway. A couple times we missed him by inches. I won't get on the same highway as him anymore. He's gonna kill someone, if not himself or his wife.
Prayers sent and genuine sympathy to all family and friends involved.
I can't believe some douchebags in threads like this. When someone is injured in a fiery car crash or head hits dash or something people don't say was they wearing a fire suit or helmet.
What an awful thing. I hope all recover completely.
Speaking for myself, Maine is a small place and when something like this happens, we all feel badly.
Sending best wishes.

The rider that was seriously hurt has been placed in a medically induced coma and is now in stable condition. He has a very serious head injury. I don't know what the prognosis is for him in the future. I have heard that he was riding on a permit and broke at least 2 laws. No helmet and carrying a passenger.
Maine requires a helmet if you are riding on a permit?
Yep. But a lucky tough talking *******. I crashed with no helmet 14 years ago. I realized that day that you should never get on a bike with no helmet. I played the stupid game. I was lucky.
