What a sad situation. Prayers for the injured and for those who witnessed it as well. I'm sure seeing something like that is sure to bring on a lot of mental and emotional stress.
Yes it does. The whole thing turned from a fun cool thing to do to a surreal nightmare from hell. Thank God there were a couple of nurses and I think a paramedic that had a clue what to do. I felt so helpless. Last word on the critically injured guy was he has a chance to make it but still in very grave condition.
Yes, I feel bad for any rider that gets hurt, but have no sympathy for those that ride with out gear.
You sound like a peach then. Where do you draw the line on judging others? Do you also reserve your sympathy for a particular brand gear only? Full face helmets, or will 1/2 helmets do? What about folks that suffer heart attacks and are over weight, do they get your sympathy?
Don't bother responding, I'm not that interested in your narrow point of view.
Group rides among relative strangers seem impossible to regulate with training, or ground rules. All it takes is one rider to forget them, and the result can be bad for many.
It is harsh. And even the best gear will not save you from heavy impact collisions. But it will save you from many injuries and reduce the severity of others.
Riding without at least a DOT helmet is a foolish choice. Helmets are so well designed these days, they take nothing from the ride and often add to it.
The same is true of proper footwear, gloves, jacket and pants. All comfortable on the bike, and capable of making the ride better if you get the right stuff.
The only drawback, honestly, is the price of good gear. But then again, our bikes are already pricey and it's worth the investment.
Best wishes for those who were hurt. We are all adults here and can make our own decisions about what gear to wear or not. It makes no sense to me to criticize after the fact.
Why does this make a difference to you? Maine has no helmet laws so some wear them, some don't.
Whether you wear a helmet or not is a choice you make. But if you choose not to wear a helmet, it makes a difference to me if you sustain a head injury and have no medical insurance. All of us pay for the uninsured to be treated in emergency rooms. All of us pay when the head injury becomes a permanent disability and can no longer work because of it.
Helmet use makes no difference to me unless your choice ends up costing me.

Strange.......I didn't see any mention of whether or not the riders had insurance? I only saw a genuine concern for fellow riders well being.
So using this logic you must also be real concerned with what people eat, smoke and drink? I'm sure that costs this country much more than head injuries.
It just amazes me how quickly people point their fingers and pass judgement within the same riding community, it's no wonder the libs and nay-sayers continue to chip away at our freedoms.
The rider that was seriously hurt has been placed in a medically induced coma and is now in stable condition. He has a very serious head injury. I don't know what the prognosis is for him in the future. I have heard that he was riding on a permit and broke at least 2 laws. No helmet and carrying a passenger.
