I believe the "texting" function on phones should be auto disabled when the GPS function senses you are moving faster then 10 miles per hour. Ya it screws the passengers over, tough $hit...
Not too long ago I was traveling on my bike down a five lane state highway between two towns that had traffic lights. I noticed a guy in a truck going slower and weaving in his lane so I stayed back from him. When we got to the stop light I noticed he was texting, the light turned green and he slowly started moving. I stayed with him until the next light and I pulled up beside him and looked at him and hollered "texting is illegal." The light turned green, he took off fast and pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. When I went by him he looked at me and gave me a thumbs up with a smile. I thought I was going to get the finger.
It is so dangerous and can't understand how people think it is ok.
Changing a CD while driving is dangerous, too. So is picking a baby bottle up off of the floor to give to a baby.
We need to enforce them all, not just the ones we don't like.
Thats stuff that only takes a few seconds although can be dangerous as well. Its a whole different level when your eyes are of the road for miles at a time while typing a book on the phone.
While it sounds like it's a likely cause, I don't see anything in that article about her texting. Maybe there are witness accounts, and that is one of the other pending charges.
Illinois has had a law since 2009 that makes texting while driving illegal, and it didn't stop anyone, largely because it was difficult to enforce. This year, use of any hand-held electronic devices is illegal. Under the previous law, people would just claim that they weren't texting - they were dialing the phone, changing songs, etc.
Under the new law, it isn't much better - I still see dozens of people texting, phoning, etc. every day.
I don't understand why they need to itemize each of these items - we have had distracted driving laws here since before I got my license 30+ years ago. I guess our modern society as a whole has become so stupid that we no longer understand what activities are distractions while driving (anything but driving).
I saw an idiot the other day with an iPad mini on his dashboard with a movie or tv show (some kind of video) playing. WTF?
