Yep, Shovels were the last of the blatant patato patato bikes. Though if you idle any HD motor down it will potato due to both rods being tied to the same journal.
And don't you guys know potatoe is spelled with an "e"?
I'm not sure I buy into the slow idle issues on them, but I'm willing to read if someone has some examples of where it's actually caused an issue.
I kept my 88" FLHRCI at around 800RPM for years nary an issue. Even the Screaming Eagle tuner would allow you to take it down to 600RPM I think. I don't believe the roller bearing bottom end requires but a few pounds of pressure to be happy.
I always believed it was more EPA related. It's easier to not have misfires pulling your scores down with a faster idle.

I've got a bucket full of trashed rod sets says you should believe it, your bike your money............ Isn't the oil pressure it's the bearing in the rods, too low an RPM the bearings will slide over the crankpin surface instead of rolling on it. Eventually the race & crankpin surfaces start cratering out.

Not to be rude, but that is yet another one I have never heard of or seen.
Seems like we got:
- Starves the top end for oil
- Starves the bottom end for oil
- Jacks up the crankshaft
- Causes dead batteries
- And now, roller bearings don't like to spin at slow speeds and I assume slow is less than 900 RPM
And still no one has come on here, that I've noticed admittedly, and said I lowered my idle and trashed my engine. There's either no story, or I knew a guy, etc. Even trashed bearings I wonder how it was determined if idle speed was the culprit. Plenty of failed bearings on relatively stock bikes, particularly in the post timken days.

I do thank you for your post Twizted regardless.
Your call what you believe or don't ,info's out there do some digging outside the forums you'll find plenty to make your own judgement with. Idle speed CONTRIBUTES with other factors to cause a problem, isn't the sole culprit.

Wouldn't you lean towards "too thin of an oil" in those situations? I'm having a hard time envisioning a low revolution being the cause of slip 'n slide on a bearing instead of rolling.
