On my 2003 FLHTCUI, the N light is frequently, but not always, not coming on when in neutral. I have had this happen before, but rarely.
Now it is frequent. I did a search and some threads said it could be the ignition relay.
Everything else works fine, and no problem shifting into neutral.
Any ideas?
Hey, I am not an expert on this, but I would start by checking the wires from your neutral switch to see if there is a break. It may be something that looks fine, but the wire is broken inside the shielding so try moving and wigling the wires while checking the light. Again, I don't know how that model is set up, but it is probably a set of wires from the transmission area. Also, check the connectors at the light itself, sometimes the vibration will cause things to break, and they may look like they are still connected, but they are not. Let me know what you find.
The neutral switch is a sensor that detects when your shifter is in the neutral position. It's located on your transmission case and monitors the internal gears. It probably needs to be replaced (Easy/Cheap fix). However, that's how it is on newer bikes. Yours may be externally monitoring the shifter lever. If that's the case then the switch is either dirty, misaligned, or needs to be replaced.
The neutral switch may be dirty or bad, try removing and cleaning and see if you can operate the neutral light with the switch before you put it back in.
