Default Sounds like I'm grinding coffee

my starter (2010 ultra limited) has been sounding like its grinding up some coffee beans lately, when I go to start. Replaced the battery after I did a load test. Thought That was it, but it's back. It's intermittent but getting more frequent. Starter engages ( no bang) and then disengages and starts grinding the beans. I let off the start button and then try again. I have read sprag clutch and compensator I just want to get what I need for parts, good instructions and replace 'em. Share your thoughts. Neil, I know you're out there. Thanks everyone.

Compensators fail often and will make the noises you are hearing. To diagnose it properly as to not buy extra parts you will need to pull open the primary and inspect everything. Check the torque on the compensator bolt as they like to back out and cause havoc in your primary. Also check the wear on your pinion and ring gear.

Thank you. Due for an oil change, so I'll have at it. When it happens, it can take 3-4 attempts to start. After that it can have repeatedly perfect starts.

Is there missing teeth on your starter ring gear?

Will I be able to inspect the ring gear with the primary cover off?
