Front brake trouble

Default Front brake trouble

When I apply my front brake it isn't smooth, I feel kick back in my brake lever, it feels like the pad catches against the rotor and then goes free over the rotor. I'm looking for suggestions. In a car when I feel feedback in the brake pedal it usually meant bad rotors. The way this acts I'm thinking my pads have hard spots? Opinions please. (My ride has 8K, ABS)

How many miles has it been since since you last changed pads?
Pads are cheep and a great place to start...

The pads are original to the bike. The rotors feel smooth without gouges.

Sure wounds like the rotors are "out of spec" when it come to run out ( like a warped record on a turn table ) or "variation in parallelism" ( thinner in spot, thicker in another ). A micrometer and a dial indicator would tell the story.

Default warped rotor, check runout

You can get a cheap clamping dial indicator at harbor freight to check it against specs in service manual. You can check both rotors and only replace the warped one if the non warped one is serviceable. I used mine when my MC was still in warranty to ensure the dealer new what I was talking about (how far the runout was and the maximum allowable runout). They only replaced the warped rotor and you can't tell any difference, no more surging during braking. The surging was most troublesome just as you were stopping and putting your feet down. a quick spin of the wheel if you have a hoist/jack and watch for wobble, like UL said a dial indicator is best
