On Softails oil will drain from the tank back into the cam chest. It is normal. Some do it worse than others. You will have a lot more oil drain out on a Softail

Your amount sounds a little high.. If the bike was running while leaning on the sidestand, you might get 2 cups but no as much as you say.. Bike level, oil level at the pump should be a whisker above the pickup..

There may be problems with oil pump assembly, problems with the cam plate or simply sumping from the oil tank in a softails or oil running forward out the filter on a bagger or dyna if the bike has been sitting. Model and Year plus what you just did would be of help..
