This year I upgraded to the S&S 106 big bore kit. In addition I upgraded cams and had the heads ported and polished. Due to these upgrades, my stock clutch was slipping on the dyno so I went ahead and upgraded to a Barnett performance clutch pack and spring. Since doing so I have had a significant increase in difficulty in pulling the clutch to the point that if I'm out riding all day or stuck in traffic my hand begins to ache. I've also had difficulty in adjusting the clutch to some extent (which is another topic).
My question is will an easy pull setup like the Burly Lite Clutch or the Muller Power clutch work with my Barnett setup? And which one would be better? Has anyone tried doing this and if so what were your thoughts/results?
Barnett makes 2 springs.. A 480 lb and 330 lb. You didn't mention the original bike but if it was a 96 ci the springs in them were only 270. The 330 barnet (early 88 ci springs will work also) or the SE (380) will stop the slip when used with barnet plates.. Obviously the heavier the spring, the harder the pull.
Use the Burly lite clutch pull or get ready to have a giant left forearm!
These items are great.. I use a cheaper version from Jireh Cycles.. A couple things you should note.. Adding the arm decreases the lever pressure by about 33% but in doing so, movement of the clutch pushrod has been reduced by the same amount.. Depending on what you use for a clutch, there may no longer be enough disengagement and the clutch will drag slightly. Too much and it can be an issue with finding neutral or down shifting..
I use these things and they work well as long as you understand what is going on.
Another item to note is that in 06 or 07, HD changed the TC clutch cams from 21 degrees to 18 to reduce clutch pull and also dropped diaphragm spring from about 320 to 270 lbs. The 21 to 18 deg change results in about a 16% reduction in force (and travel). So another thing to remember is that you can mix clutch cams, burrly, and springs to get a good level pull. +1 clutch plate kits can have issues.
