Hi guys and gals! My wife drives a 2015 sportster iron (xl883n) and had stock exhaust. My Kawasaki was making more noise than her Harley and that didnt sit right by me.
so i bought her new V&H shorty duals and they sound amazing!
only thing is that she complains about low power in the low revs and we are considering a tune up.
next question is: what "power comander" of sorts do you recommend and is it wise to set her up with an open air filter or is that not really necessary?
V&H makes a nice product as does Harley so either will work just fine. There are many video tutorials on YouTube that walk you through the tuning process. Really quite easy which is what is nice about the graphical interface through your Smartphone.

sounds great! And a tat cheaper than tuning at a shop..
I had a 2014 1200 I put Cobra slip ons on, I didn't notice a power decrease, but it did pop A TON, I used the FP3 ran through their preset maps, picked the map that seemed the closest to the pipes I had, worked awesome. No issues, super easy to use. The autotune gave me some fits at first, ran through that a few times, going between the base map and using the auto-tune, it finally clicked and then it ran awesome. We have a FP3 on a 2014 Ultra Limited with slip ons as well, easy on that one too. The app gives you a lot of engine data as well, it was fun.
If there is a physical power decrease due to loss of exhaust velocity & scavenging ability at the lower RPMs due to shorty duals, tuning it will only tune it to the best it can do now - it won't necessarily restore lost power due to loss of exhaust velocity and scavenging. Typically people think it's faster because it "comes on" harder as the rpm comes up, but they're really only feeling it come out of the torque dip.
