Default laid down my bike

Hey guys I'm pretty new to riding here. I have an 02 nighttrain with a carbonated 110, and 6 speed baker. I was turning around off a main street, hit some gravel at 10 mph and the bike slid put from underneath me. Broke a peg, my transmission belt (open drive), my shifter, kickstand was a little messed up but it works just fine now. My shifter.for the transmission is all sorts of loose, all ot does is just move freely and wont engage or disengage the transmission, I tried starting the bike back up after I laid it down but all it did was just click, I had oil coming out of the air intake at the time but it has since stopped. I am looking to repair the bike myself so any help would be appreciated. I do not know the technical names for all the parts yet so i can take videos and pictures as needed. Thank you.

Welcome aboard.

Sounds like you're in over your head mechanically, but the first thing you should get is a Factory Service Manual.

I plan on it. I've worked on cars my entire life, done anything from an oil change to a transmission swap on cars. I know they're different but I was hoping to be able to do it all on my own.

That sucks, but be grateful that you weren't hurt. The bike can be repaired. Good luck getting it back on the road.

Thank you oh I forgot to mention, the shift lever is loose but the linkage when I pull it by hand shifts just fine.

I just checked it and I've got a leak somewhere. I have a big puddle of oil underneath the bike now

Inspect your shifter linkage. The stock linkage ends are known to shear if they have to transfer enough energy. If this is the culprit, Landmark makes a much stronger unit with real heim joints. Like this-
