Default Tools - (Sizing Down House)

Guys, what do you do???

When you size down from a larger to smaller house, do NOT plan on wrenching anymore, what do you do with all your tools?

Yes, I will keep a few basic tools (and my compressor) only but everything else?

1. Garage Sale?
2. Drop them off at a local charity?

Oddly, the above does not seem like the right answer. What am I missing? What would you do? My kids are not interested.

I have multiple sets of sockets, adjustable pliers, vice grips, electrical stuff, etc..... AHHHH!!!!

TY!!!!

if I were closer, I have a solution for you!!! I am former service technician/auto mechanic so I have a tool box full of tools. I am a tool junkie, so I always keep my eye out for tools I don't have. But I am pretty stretched for space now, so I have to trim back. Myself.... I would have a hell of a time getting rid of tools. Both my son and son-in-law have tool sets and some of my "extras". I guess my only suggestion is to make a pile of stuff you really do not need and list it here on one of the gear for sale threads, and/or list on craigs list. I know how you feel....good luck!!!

Kids don't want them that was my first response. Good tools are expensive and they take time n money to accumulate. I'd do a little research and see if you cant figure out what they are worth. Let your friends know you are selling first. My tools are like my guns, I won't sell any of them. I understand down sizing. They can do what they want with em when I'm dead.

Um, wait what? Your question seems to be contrary to the title. You said downsizing house not garage, LOL.

That is a good question. My thought would be, if you are doing less wrenching, which of your kids or friends that is close by still does? I would relocate my tools to them so that if wrenching was required you can still have access to your tools and you know they went to a good home. Otherwise I may donate them to a local high school or tech school for a student that cannot afford the new tools.

Downsizing or not, I wouldn't get rid of my tools. Tools = independence. The minute you don't have any is when you get jerked around paying for stuff you could do yourself and probably do a better job.

When I croak my son gets my tools. If by chance he decides otherwise, he'll have to sell them including my table lift, tire machine and the HD specific tools.

I'm in the same situation.. Try to sell them and take a pounding. Tool box and roll away are loaded with Mac & Snap On, including air tools and electric tools.. Told the kids to hold onto them when I pass. Who knows..

thing is tools second hand are a dime a dozen. thanks to the chinese, tool brands are in the hundreds if not thousands. all said and done, you lose and lose big. only a true junkie knows the diff between craftsman and pittsburg forge. that said, i have a deeper respect for some of hf tools, but be careful, not all they sell are good. i went in there to get a set of tools to put in my camper so i do not have to always transfer between shop and if i leave them, no cry as the whole she-bang was less than hundred bucks. i also have used their 3/4 drive sets and even abused them and no issues yet.
the charitable route does have an advantage in that you can deduct the market value on income tax but that to is deceptive as you only get back what ever your rate is. trade school in your area, plenty of new mechanics probably looking for tools.

I wouldn't get rid of them unless you're trying to free up space.
I'm sure you could post and sell to your Florida brothers if you wanted to.
btw.... welcome back
