My old bike lift used a standard 4 ton bottle jack with the round handle, easy to control for wheel reinstall. The hand control allowed a slow lowering for easy alignment of axle holes easy axle install.
The old lift wasn't up to the weight of a newer Road King so I now have a modern jack with the foot pedal release, it's on off release no way to make a slow lowering.
Any tips ? Only thing I can think of is let it drop a bit lower than where the holes align then slowly jack it back up. Not thrilled with a quick drop while keeping the wheel assembly clear of the swing arm or forks.
If this a motorcycle jack that is being discussed then maybe a bolt on foot release lever as shown on you tube might help.

I leave the bike and MC lift all they way up. Then I roll over a standard rolling jack ($39.95 at Napa) and put the wheel on that, then jack the wheel UP to the bike. This way the bike stays secure on the lift. Just a thought, good luck.
