I did that on my last bike, works great but get “earth” magnets off eBay or Amazon...or maybe if Lowe’s carries them. Using epoxy helps prevent scratches. The biggest problem I had was trying to find metal that likes magnets other than the ignition switch.
i guess the magnet would work but i don't know why you cant just put it on top of the fuel pump or on the saddle bag, or even on the damn seat. Seems more like you're solving a problem that doesn't exist.
I've been riding for about 20'ish years and I've never forgot to put my cap back on and i cant see how someone would make such an error
Well then, I guess you don't put magnets on your gas cap. I was putting mine on my seat and it would roll around and end up on the ground. My friend was putting his on the pump and started to pull off without it. For us simple minded people the magnet thing works and was just putting it out there for others that might want to use it.
I'm left handed..... I just hold the cap in my left hand and squeeze the pump nozzle with my right. Simple, eh?! Well it is for me.
But nice idea about the magnets. You could just stick the cap w/magnet right on the top or side of your gas tank. That way you won't miss seeing it when you leave!!

The top of the pump is usually filthy, don't want any of that crap ending up in my tank. With my previous bikes I always just set cap on the seat. With the new bike, and it's longer filler neck, I can't completely top off unless I lightly rock the bike to burp the tank which then caused the cap to roll off the seat. In my case, the magnet mod solved a problem that did exist (for me), and other than five minutes of my time, it cost me nothing.
