modifying handlebars
I installed road king custom bars on my 03 road king classic but
the grips are now about 2" too long plus, theangle of the new bars is uncomfortable during extended rides. It forces the wrists to bend too much like when you go to open a door ****. I want my wrists to be in a more natural position: knuckles facing more forward, if that makes visual sence.
What I would like to do is spread the bars about 3" while they are still on the bike using a jig I made that slides into the grip openings and uses a small hydralic jack to move them apart the desired distance.
Has anyone done this (on or off the bike) and do you know if standardharley handle bars can be bent moderately (just widening them) without causing any structural damage?
Thanks,
Salvo

I have friends that have spread their bars a bit while they were on the bike and it didn't seem to hurt anything, but it was only a little bit, maybe a haif inch to an inch at the most. I don't think 3" would be a very good idea. Just because the strength of the bars are in the shape they are made, and if you stress them to far you will compromise that, does that make any sense. I would try to find another set I liked and sell the ones you have. But thats just me.
