@Dynamick Yes, I knew that about HiFlo and K&N filters being the same. That's why I'm curious about the 'catastrophic failure' comment. I've been using both brands for many years on many different motorcycles and never had a problem with any of them.

The only brand I've heard anything real negative about is Fram; can't confirm as I've never used of one theirs in any application.

@Dynamick I see that you have a Guzzi - nice looking bike. Back in the '70s I had an 850 Le Mans and in the early '80s had a SP1000. Great bikes - both of them.

I suppose I can see how the cheap black ones that work 99% of the time could slip.

Over 20 years ago bought made in USA solid one. I suppose anything could happen. But I think the fitting on base is more likely to slip

I always snug my filter with a wrench, and always use wrench to get off.

@Schex Thanks for that, I thought that's what the other member meant when he said to use some self tapping screws. Definitely going to do this.

@Germansheperd Thanks for the pic. If the cup tool doesn't work I'll be doing what you did. Looks pretty straight forward to move the oil cooler.

It was still a bitch don’t get me wrong but it was straight forward and all I could do with what I had to work with at the time.
