Changed my battery before my trip to Va 400 miles or so. that may or may not have been the cause of this issue. at some point in the trip my check engine light came on, and the red temp light came on.
took it to the dealer would have been two days before he got to my bike. i rode my bike back to Jersey about 400 miles. coolant was a little low, I topped it off with water let the bike sit and warm up after sitting all night eventually the temp light came on, and coolant expanded came out of the overflow hose. I rode it to the dealer 50 miles away it ran fine no extreme over heating it ran normal. Dealer didn't have time to diagnose/ I rode it back home to jersey with the temp light and check engine light on. I can force the fan to run when the engine is not running but the fan will not run while the engine is running. the dealer tech said he felt the pump running when forced to run. does anyone have any idea why the fan will run with engine off and ignition on in test mode but will not engage when the engine is running.
Welcome to the forum.
You might want to tell us the year and model of your bike.

If the pump is operating correctly, then you need to fill the system and follow the air bleed out described in the HD Service Manual, then if it does not still work you may have a bad temperature sensor. Check the wiring to the temp sensor to make sure it is connected and/or the wire is not broken/chaffed
@Letsgetiton I have moved this thread from the Welcome section to the General Topics/Tech Tipssection as you will get better responses to your question in this section. The Welcome section is more for introducing yourself & letting other forum members know what Harley Davidson you own, not asking technical questions.
Also as stated above it would help if you gave some more info re what bike / year / model you are talking about
I would think temp sensor problem or wiring problem.
If you just changed the battery and there were no issues before try pulling the main fuse for 10 mins. or so. Worth a try.
