Just wondering if anyone has tips about breaking-in a motorcycle (specifically a 96TC engine, soon to be 103), to maximize engine reliability and performance.
Ride it like a scalded beast. Break in shmake in... they told me on every bike i have had that i shouldn't ride it above specific RPM's that wouldn't keep me over 50mph on the highway. Never had a single issue. Don't get wrong... i joke a little. I wouldn't be constantly hitting the rev limiter. But otherwise, ride it like you plan on riding it on a daily basis. You shouldn't have any issues.
Do Not HEAT CYCLE , Do Read and Follow the Instructions in the Owners Manual.
When you do the 103 kit, Follow Instructions in the Owners Manual.
Just my .02 Worth,
Now Ride it and Enjoy It.

Just look at the guy in the Motoman pic and ask yourself...would you want this jamoke riding your bike?
Follow the HD break in procedure and change oil at 500 & 1000 miles. Some guys (me) change at 100 miles as well. I used Syn3 to break my bike in because it is a GroupIII synthetic.

I know I'm in the minority but I try not to judge people by how they look and I respect the opinion of people who are more knowledgeable than me in an area.

Not in the minority with me brother...
I break everything in using those principals.
READ his article and then make a decision. Look at the pics and see what a "weak" owners manual style breakin ends up looking like on the Piston seating. It's all about seating the pistons and if you don't get it right in the limited window of opportunity you will have a less than optimal engine.
Also don't go jumping to Synth oil too soon. You'll never break your bike in. Regardless of what anyone looks like, "seating" your rings is what a break in is all about.
+1 this is how i do it and its worked all 3 times for me.
