I'm new to wrenching on a HD...sooooo I'm gonna change my derby cover...is there fluid in there that I will need to replace...I have a new gasket...just not sure whats gonna fall out when I remove the derby cover...see told it was stupid....(OK OK I can hear all you guys rolling your eyes...going...what a lamer...)...but hey if you don't ask you can't find out right?[8D]
Just be careful when putting it back on, do not over tighten the bolts, they like to strip and break!!! The first time I removed mine, I tightend up to spec and it broke, had to drill it out........now I just hand tighten
I would rather ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake!!!
Biggest mistake I made when starting to do this stuff was to mis read the service manual. I read inch pounds, but saw foot pounds... don't make that mistake. I think the specs for tightening the derby cover are in inch pounds... so if you do it in foot pounds, you will be sorry.
Why not pick up a quart of primary oil and do a service as long as you are opening it up with the new gasket you have, cheap enough to do and easy too, you did the whole thing other than draining it first.

I see from your profile that the bike in question is a 2007 LowRider.
The derby cover on 06 and 07 Dynas have an O-ring type gasket.
If your new cover is the pre 2006 style, you will need to get a new "old style" derby gasket for it.
That part number is 25416-99C.
