Hacked, Conversions and Trailering"Harley Sidecar, Conversion Trikes and Motorcycle Pull Behind Trailering Enthusiasts"
A forum for the discussion of your sidecar, Conversion Trike or Pull Behind Motorcycle Trailer.
I currently have a very nice HD Ultra Sidecar on my 08 Ultra. My wife wants me to ditch the hack and get a trike kit put on my Ultra. With my knees, she's probably right. I'm almost 63 and the doc suggested a plastic knee 12 years ago.
Now, here's the rub. I have been all over the internet looking at trike kits. There are a few out there that I like better than the rest. I stopped in at a shop just north of Knoxville last Friday and looked at a couple. The lady there said that no one would sell me a kit, I would have to go through a dealer and have one installed. Does anyone know if I can buy a kit and do my own install/conversion? I ain't bad with a wrench. I can save around 3 grand by doing it myself, let alone know that it is done right and torqued properly.
i just bought an american trike kit off ebay for wifes bike and am in middle of finishing it very nice set up full independent suspention and body with trunk if you want to pm me i can give you name and number of the guy i got it from nice guy
Sounds to me like someone is trying to drum up business for themselves. I know a couple of friends who did there own conversion. A friend just recently converted his Ultra Classic using a Champion Kit. He said he had it basically finished (except for paint) in a weekend.
There is a couple of guys on this forum who did there own.

Contact DFT. They advertise in Easy Rider sometimes. I'm almost certain they will be glad to sell you a complete kit. I had our Fatboy converted at a dealer but I know for certain they will sell you any parts for a kit. I have bought some myself. Just get on the net and look up DFT or Darn Fine Trike. We love our DFT conversion. Its independent suspension and has a great look.
I bought a DFT kit back in 2003, thru one of their distributers. I went up to the factory in Chicago and picked it up. It was an easy kit to assemble, two days not including the paint. The hardest part was getting the bike strapped down with the rear end up in the air. It was pretty much a bolt on assembly. The only thing was, on my 2001 ultra, I had to cut the rear fender half off to clear some of the assembly. The DFT was a great trike, then I traded it for the 2009 Triglide.
On our Fatboy, they took the rear fender completely off, so it wasn't a problem. We have the Smoothie kit on our bike and the fiberglass body replaces the rear fender. We are real happy with our DFT kit and the Champion reverse we had installed.

The DFT kit would have been my choice if I had converted my 06 Ultra.
