Default The Dreaded MSF "Box"

Here is me last week on the MSF range with my Dyna. No, I didn't practice, I just rode it. How many of you riders have re~visited the range with your Harley?

I took my first ARC 2 years ago, then took the BRC last May, then became a ridercoach in June. Now, I ride lot of smaller bikes on the range (in front of student riders.)

In comparison, I went back to where I took my DMV riding test in 1976...

Kinda the same except there's a larger penalty for blowing it...

The base range is on my way to work. I do it as often as I can its a great skill. I can now do the small box on my fatboy.

Inside the 20' box. Nicely done!

Did you know the "S" turn is EXACTLY the same turn as the box, sizewise?

I see you start your first turn with the clutch in, but then modulate it during the remainder of the turn.

My SO says "Impressive! Tell him to forget the butt shift on the U-turns. It's not needed for novices and not included in the RCP or cards anywhere. You can lean to the outside with your upper body only, and/or weight the outside peg/floorboard." Yeah, she's a RiderCoach as well.

I did know that. The S turn area will fit inside the U-turn area. It is always fun seeing the students reaction when we release that tidbit of info. As for the butt shift I do that more out of habit from riding the small bikes and showing the students. /when demoing the exercise we have to over exaggerate our movements so they can see what it is we are trying to teach them.

The ABATE course is done on the local High School parking lot, 1 block from my house. I go out and use it when they are done every year. Just to keep sharp.

You can tighten that up by doing a quick dip before starting your turn. When people come up short on these type exercises it's because they didn't use all the available space before they started turning. The dip also places the rear wheel more directly behind the the front as opposed to tracking inside.

You can also tighten it up by counter balancing as well. It's refreshing to see someone working on their skills.
