So im getting ready to install my thundermax that I bought very slightly used and its the older version that has the data port in the center. The cable that is provided is data port on one end and a serial port on the other. My laptop doesnt have a serial port, I know zippers sell a serialto usb cable, but my question is can I use any serial to usb cable? I can run to staples or best buy to pick one up. Thanks

It depends.. The zippers cables is pretty much guaranteed to work but many of the others will work also.. The problem is that some of the cable are cheep Chinese knockoffs of good Chinese cables and getting the right drivers can be a chore..
I would suggest finding one that has good reviews on line and trying it.. I picked up a better one from Office Depot and it has worked fine on 2 different laptops.. It's even worked well for interfacing to an electronic dial indicator..
You could probably go to some place like Best Buy or Office Depot and ask if you can return it if it don't work for what you are doing.. If you find a good geek, he/she should be able to set you up.
I got mine from Staples and it worked fine, came with the driver on a disk. Bear in mind this was a few years ago. I knew if there was an issue I could always return it to the store.
