Ok.. 2012 flhtp, all stock other than cfr slip-ons. I bought the bike last October with just under 15k miles on it. Now just turned 23k miles and the bike has ran great up until around 1k miles ago. I started to get a slight ping while cruising on the freeway at around 70mph and has only gotten worse. The local dealer sold me a V&H fuelpak that they said would cure all my problems. I have tried several different maps with no luck. Pinging has gotten so bad I don't want to ride it. Have put new stock plugs in and changed fuel filter. Running octaine booster in every tank. Tried seafoam through the carb to clean out carbon build up. Even tried putting the stock exhaust back on with no luck. Not sure what to do next. Any ideas?
I bought a '13 Ultra Classic 2 months ago and it did same thing. Bike was 100% stock. Only pinged at highway speeds while cruising. Not when given throttle or a load applied, just cruising. Did it in 5th and 6th gear. It'd ping, I'd give it some gas, ping would stop for a few seconds, then come back as soon as I let off the gas. Ran 2 tanks of Chevron fuel cleaner concentrate thru it, no improvement. Always used 93 octane.
Installed V&H slip ons, and a PV5 tuner and pinging went away.
I would almost bet your pinging is from carbon buildup on the piston. Caused by the oil coming out of the head breathers and being deposited into your air intake.. D&K have many different vent to atmosphere systems to get the hot moist oily air out of your breather.
Makes sense. The air filter does have a bit of oil in it when I pull it off. I ran a whole can of SeaFoam through the intake with the bike running. Was told it would smoke like crazy for a little bit burning out the carbon. It didn't really smoke that bad and when I would stop spraying the SeaFoam, it would stop smoking.
I ran another can of seafoam through the intake, no change. Bike is running very hot. The fuelpak the dealer sold me is crap. Going to do a fuel pressure test today and see if pressure is low. Or maybe the injector is partially clogged. Not sure where to go after this.

I added a stage 1 air cleaner and that helped out a lot. I guess a lot more air flowing through it helped cool it down. Pinging is mostly gone now. Every once in a while I get a little but not bad. Now I just need to get this fuelpak dialed in a little better until I can afford another one. Probably gonna go with the Power Commander.
Mine still pinged after I installed a PC V from FM after I installed the slip ons. They sent me a new map and it fixed it. The initial map was close, just needed tweaked. I image yours will need some too. Just traded off my bike for a new one Fri and pulled it off.
