Default 1993 FLHS Cruise Control Part III

Well, got into the instrument cluster today and started to paw around seeing what might need to me modified (Hackd) to get the factory cruise harness to work. Seems that most of the stuff is there already. Moved the passing lamp switch over to the left side of the steering head (where it should have been originally, in my opinion) Needed to make a pigtail from the tach to the cruise wiring harness, seems that HD doesn't supply them with the cruise kit, I cannibalized some pink wire from a Mustang/Jeep project I'm working on. I'm gonna switch the brake light circuit over to a new 15 amp breaker (in place of the 10 amp unused breaker) like the Ultra's do. That way if anything goes zap on the brake light circuit, the breaker will pop and the cruise will shut down, just like the Ultra's. The green cruise light has the harness already there, so it'll plug right into the cruise harness. And there are loads of ground spades to plug into. Hit the HD dealer today and got the breaker, cruise on/off swith (same as the passing lamp switch), and some plastic wire mounting trees. Had to order the FLTCU cruise on/off light and harness assembly.

Now here's the perplexer: The cruise harness has two green striped/white (W/GN) wires, one marked with white tape, the other with yellow tape. The green white wire, according to all the Electra Glide wiring diagrams connect to the speedometer reed switch. Which sends a signal to the turn signal cancellation module, the radio (to turn the volume up/down), and the cruise. The mind screw comes when you look at the cruise harness and see that the two W/GN wires are joined into ONE WIRE! Why in the world would HD have two separate connections to the same device? I can't answer this. The wiring diagrams provide me with no insights as there aren't any resistor/diodes/etc on either of the two spots HD instructs you to plug into. Seems to me, from my high school electronics anyway, that this is a bit of redundancy. It appears to me that a simple one wire hookup to the speedometer reed switch should do the job. Again, why in the world HD would put two, is beyond me. Unless it was for a 'special' application (police, etc). Who knows? But according to the wiring diagrams, the only thing that's putting out a signal is the speedometer reed switch. Nothing else. Dang how HD can make your head spin. I had already modified the reed switch wire to accept the two leads from the harness, but now I think I'll just cut one of them out. Make it a really clean install.

Tomorrow, unless the house caves in, I'll tear the rest of the bike down and start the install.
