Stock location would be under the right side cover just in front of the saddlebag. It’s possible that it has been replaced by an aftermarket unit which would be totally located in the timing cover (cam cover).
Bike had or has a Manganelli system....only used 2 yrs by Harley. Only suggestion to repair from dealerships are to sell it, or invest to install carbs.,
Anyone else having had this problem...what did you do?
Your input is greatly appreciated.
the pickup in the old breaker compartment (nose cone as some say) does fail over time and becomes heat sensitive and can cause stall issues. if the stock ignition was replaced with one under the cover, it to can fail with heat. i had an ultima that did the same. they have an over-current protection and will reset when the key is cycled.
but some of your issues point to something else.
power from batt > through 30 amp circuit breaker > starter post > ignition switch > system
if the circuit breaker heats up (bi-metal type) it will trip the power circuit, when it cools down, it will self reset and as long as the load causes it to heat up, it will cycle. these thing go bad over time so the first thing is to replace it, available at auto parts stores for a couple of bucks. it the contacts are burnt, no power to the ignition switch.
also, do not over look cable connections.
It's fuel injected.
I'm not at the location of the bike...my son working on it in Fl. Also misstated was the year..it's a '98
Absolutely no indication of anything energizing, or lighting up....just as if there was a dead battery.
At any rate...upon further examining, tinkering/jiggling the wiring...we determined that the connector/connection for the cam position into the wiring harness weren't always making contact.
An planned extended ride on the weekend will tell ALL!!!!
