Default Accessing a Power Source

I have an ' 08 Ultra Classic and have mounted a Garmin Street Pilot on the handle bar using a Ram Mount. I need to source 12v power. The dealer suggested that rather than tapping into the Accessory plug under the seat, it would be far easier to access an ignition powered hot wire inside the fairing.

I see rubber grommets into the fairing for the clutch and brake cables so that seems like a logical place to enter the fairing. What I need advice on is 1) How do I take the fairing apart to get inside it? They referred to removing the "front". 2) What would be a good power source that was only on when the key was on? 3) What connector is recommended (a scotch-lok or something more robust).

Thanks for the advice.

I can't speak for an 08 fairing but on the 07 there are 3 screws in the front and 4 on the inside. You can find 2 of those pretty easily and the other two or under the fairing in the fork area.

Regarding power sources,
Some use the backside of the cigarette lighter and tap into that. Others have used the headlight and some (me) have routed the wire to the wires on the accessory switch (right below the switch) to haveswitched power for the zumo. If you go my route, then it is as sample as figuring out which side of the accessory switch has hot power and which one is ground. It is pretty easy to turn the forks to the left and look up under the switch itself to see the wires you need to tap into. Depending on the freeplay you might get away without detaching the lower inside fairing plate - but even if you have to loosen it, no big deal.

All three options can use the inline type of connectors where it taps into the existing line with a press of your fingers.

There are many other options available, but these are the ones I see the most of.

There are 7 screws holding the fairing on, 2 at the bottom between the forks, 2 at the outer corners, and the 3 that hold the windshield on. I tapped into my cigarette lighter power source on my Ultra, I also soldered my connections.Best to review the procedure in a service manual if you have concerns.

You can pick up a generic plug that goes into the cigarette lighter socket and splice your positive power line into it.
