My bike moved from Detroit MI (elev. 600 ft.) to Idaho Falls ID (elev. 5000 ft.). If I do not have the EFI reprogrammed, then the bike will run rich and poorly (it is a '04 EFI w/o an oxygen sensor in the front pipe). Is my thinking correct? What should this reprogram cost at a dealer?
The bike should not need anything. Do you think that HD programs each bike for the location in the world that the bike will be shipped to? I don't think so.
The MAP sensor is supposed to measure relative air pressure at start-up. That is one reason why you should stop when you ride through major elevation changes. 1. Let MAP sensor take new reading. 2. Take in the sites.

No, but, they do not account for the difference in octane ratings apparently. I moved from south central Missouri at 92-93 octane to Tucson, AZ at 91 octane and was detonating so bad I couldn't maintain 70 in 6th on my 07 E'glide. The rear plug was white to the insulator on the ground strap. I did all that WALLYN suggested to, no change. I took it in to HD and they down loaded the "Anti-Ping Software". It has run better. 5 months later it is starting to Ping again. WTF. Is there Anti Ping Software and if so why is it not working now? If not, why did it work for 5 months?

HUH????????? Anti-Ping Software????? There is NO SUCH THING.....
What they did was install an UPDATED Base Map, and when that was done, the AFV was reset....
Over the past month or so the "Winter" fuel has come out and has a higher alcohol content, resulting in different combustion....
As far as OBF's query... The MAP sensor will compensate for altitude changes....
But alas... Fuel quality is the never-ending problem....
Thanks for your reply. In Detroit, I used 93 octane, but here in Idaho Falls, they have 91 octane. As for the summer/winter blend differences, only time will tell on how my bike will run.
I live here in central California and only dream of 93 octane, 91 barely gets by on 100degree days.
Your bike will run just fine as far as the elevation issue. I have run up into Yosemite many times at 8-9,000 feet and not an issue at all on my '03 Heritage FI.
Wife has '00 Dyna carb bike, and it idles slow when we stop with a little black smoke at 9-10,000 feet over Tioga Pass.
