Upgraded the pistons on my 96 FLHR (carb) to Wiseco +0.003 and 10.1:1 and the bike was pinging like crazy. All is stock except the Dyna 2000i module.
I opened it up and saw that it was set to curve 4 with VOES in retard mode. (installed at an indy). 6000RPM and dual fire.
Got the manual out and switched off the VOES (since it's only for bikes with turbo) and changed the curve to curve 2 since it's closest to stock.
Now, it doesn't ping but it's really sluggish in 1st and 2nd gear. If I hold the throttle at 2nd gear, the bike would sputter and jerk but once I open it up and increase the revs, this sputtering goes away.
Is this caused because I'm using high comp pistons or is my ignition module screwed. It's only got about 50k on it so I don't think so.
Yup set that one according to the instructions sheet. Here's the thing, I adjusted it to curve 1, pick-up is much smoother but there's still some hesitance. The coil has about 130K on it but it was working fine before the high comp pistons went in.
VOES is not for turbo, it is like a vacuum advance, it's for part throttle (cruise) speed operation better mileage and response. When you roll it on the vacuum drops and the switch opens retarding the spark to prevent pinging.
I see, but the instructions advised against VOES stating it was for Turbo / Nitrous applications. Now on curve 1, it still pings but not as much as when it was on curve 4 with VOES on. Curve 2 + VOES off was the best with no pinging at all unless i really lug it but it was sputtering and hesitating in the 1st and 2nd gear.
I'll try the VOES on in curve 1 tomorrow. Is there anyway to check if my coil is good? Spark plugs and cables are new and good. Can it be my carb?
My carb (stock) has a history of overflowing. Every once in awhile it would crank but not start so i'll have to empty the gas from the carb and it'll start right up.
that specific unit uses the switch on the module labeled voes to select wether or not you want the voes always grounded, select off to utilize the voes switch for automatic spark retard at high vacuum.
