Great write up. I think the PV is going to mature into an outstanding product. I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with the PC V and auto tune for most people. The PV and other ECU flash units are a great option for those who have the time and gumption to dig into the ECU tables and self tune a number of tables the PC V can't get access to.
i wasn't even gonna go with the tuner and ac on my bike. been riding it for a year with just pipes (and no cat). the pv changed my mind on that. got it from jamie, along with the fm se air cleaner. made a good ride even better. and i'm not really planning on doing all that much tweaking, but i really like the idea of not having a piggyback module. had a pciii on my last bike, no issues with it, just wanted the simplicity of the ecm flash, and since uncle sam saw fit to give me a tax refund this year, how could i not take advantage of it?
i do like being able to datalog. my last ride, my datalog showed that my cylinder head temp never exceeded 192*. cool stuff.....
Bob,
Excelent write up man! Sounds like you have dove into this like every other tuner you have run. I am still real happy with PCV & A/T you had helped me dial into to perfection. I know cant wait to hear what this new PCV wonder will be.
Thanks again for being one of the best on the scene reporters here for us. Wondering why the heck you had been so quite lately but i knew this was your destany after it came out!
What's needed is an auto tune unit that has real time timing advance up to the point of knock retard so max power is always made on the fly. Timing curves are the biggest mystery to me at this point without extensive datalogging and review and adjustments. I use a SEPST, and can adjust timing, but feel its a trial and error excercise. AutoTiming is the newest need that I can foresee!!!
There must be a reason why it isn't done, as nobody is doing it AFAIK. It requires three parameters (RPM, KPA, and degress of retard) so perhaps that's why the engineering has been exclusive of any sort of "auto-spark" feature. Maybe one of the math whizzes here can explain it. Dustball, are you lurking?
After doing some datalogging I find that I'm getting some knock retard in one place for the front cyl. only and in another for the rear, but it is inconsistent making it difficult to decide on adjustments. I talked with Jamie today and proposed that if the knock-retard stays within the ECU's maximum (default is 8°) there should be no worries or need to make adjustments. Jamie agreed, so I'm going to get it within that maximum and not worry about it. It will retard on-the-fly as it senses knock and before it becomes audible or destructive.

Thanks. I actually wasn't going to go with the PV since the PCV-AT was doing so well. You know, if it aint broke.... Well, for the reasons already given I decided to go for it and I like it so far, but would recommend that you keep the PCV unless you have a clear reason to change, as both are good tuners.
The big problem I have with the PV, SERT, and TTS is that they lock via software to one bike. That is total BS and is only done to get the public and dealers to purchase a unit for every bike. It is done to make the manufacturer money. This is particularly true with the SERT, TTS, and now the PV. It would only take one of these manufacturers to stop that **** and the others would follow. What do you do if your ECM takes a dump and has to be replaced? Guess what, you have to buy another tuner. The best deal out there is still the PCV which it tunable via a dyno for max power yet you can pull it off and take it with you when you change bikes.
The companies that write the software packages to tune todays high performance modified cars do not pull crap. They do charge tuners a license fee but they can tune as many cars their little heart desires with a single copy
