Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I have a 2000 Dyna with a TC88 engine. Have lots of work done already, cams heads bored out bigger carb. Only part i havent touched is the ignition. So what can i do to the ignition to gain more power? Looking for good bang for the buck on this. Perf ignition module? coil? what can i do, looking for something that is relatively easy to put on. I know some ignition modules are tunable and stuff which id rather not deal with, id rather have plug and play set it and forget it. But I'm gonna get the bike dyno tuned anyway to dial in the carb and all so i guess it would be best to have them tune the ignition while its on the dyno.
I plan to tune it myself seat of the pants to get as best i can then take it to a local shop for dyno tuning to ensure im getting the most out of it. I pay by the hour so i want it to be as close as possible to start so they arent working on it all day.
What is a good ignition upgrade for me to do thats not gonna brake the budget? maybe $200-250 if possible.
I just got a Dyna 2000P from PowersportParts.net for ~$320 shipped. a little bit over your budget, but thats the one that every one I talked to recommended.

This is the one I'm interested in specifically. not the same one you got though right? How much power gain would i expect from something like this? Eager to see the gains you get.

heh, i'll get a LOT of gains, but mostly because my bike aint running quite right (MM efi is failing, and the coil is cooked. this is a piece of my carb conversion, so I expect a night and day difference)

I wonder if i would really gain that much power from it. Right now i have S&S 510G, Rev Perf stage II heads, 98in big bore kit, 10.5/1 pistons, Mikuni HSR45 carb, On the way is prolly a thunderheader also.
So the ignition is all that i havent really touched yet, i wonder if its worth it for a good power gain. Dont have much money left after everything else lol
Look for the Ultima Ignition units - they are a rebadged Dyna 2k Programable nosecone unit. You can pickup a new one with a coil for about $150 A Ebay or Jirha (watch the coils though as they are utter crap)

Can i use the stock coil with the new ignition module?
Yes....The Ultima and most aftermarket units support single fire or the stock duel fire. Most folks find that the bike idles better and vibrates less when they go to a Single Fire setup - you will get a small perf increase but i doubt you would notice it as its fairly small.
I have run single fire for the past 20 years with a set of Dyna S coils - they are the bees knees! I swapped to an Ultima Single fire coil and in less than 12 months it chit itself (a story i find repeated everywhere wrt these coils)
