I am in the process of changing over my drag bars to 12" Ape hangers. So I need to extend the wiring for the switches. What is the best way to add in extensions and where is the best spot to do it. I have looked at two possible options:
1. Remove the pins from the harness connector that goes into the main harness attached to the frame. Its a Deutsh connector and the pins come out easy. attach connector male pins to the wire and put the female end bacxk into the connector, solder joints and heat shrink the joints and recover with provided plastic wire cover. This requires extensions of a predetermined length.
2. Cut the harness somewhere at the part where the harness comes out of the hadles bars (internally wired currently) and solder in extensions, heat shrink and re-wrap the harness.....
What is the best way to do this. Any suggestions to the options I see or perhaps there is a further option. I need to remove the harness from my bars as they are currently internally wired. So either the pins come out or I cut the wires......assistance please!
Cut the wires closer the the plug than the switch, then solder in some extensions. Heat shrink your splices. Be sure to stagger your cuts so you don't have your slices in one big bunch.
Ya what XXXflhrcisaid. Staggering the splices is the ticket. I'll assume you are going to run the wiring inside the bars so I woulddo the spilces in the middle so they end up inside the bars. Out of site out of mind, and definatly solder and useheat shrink. Be sure to deburr all sharp edges.
whats happin?? got a question for you guys, i recently bought sum 16" apes fur the dyna and i got all the cables for the taller bars. my question is i also bought a wire extetion kit from dennis kirk by novell or sumthin and it only came with 12 wires!!! i counted 19 in the plastic housings runnin down the bars, thats including both turn signals. should i return this kit and just buy wire or am i missin sumthin?? any help would be greatly appericated. i would really like to get these bad boys on.
Drag Specialties carries a wiring extension kit that comprises of color-coded wire extensions for hand controls with male and female duetch terminals on both ends and shrink tube included. So there need not be any cutting of wires. They carry two kits; one for bikes without cruise control and one for bikes with cruise (more wires)
i think i found the ticket. i did see both kits one with cruise and one without but all the bike has is the set screw under the throttle. is this considered cruise?? i didnt think it was i assumed road king action would be the cruise control. none the less i think i got a good idea. i did some lookin on the net and found some harnesses and connectors so i can cut and wire them up under the headlight visor. this way if the bars ever need to come off theres a left and right harness to un-plug. take the clutch and brakeperches off and all thats left is the 2 throttle cables. beats having to take the tank off to get to the stock harnesses and all that mess to get the bars off. if ya wanna see i'll be posting some pics once completed, should be a few weeks.
