I just bought a 2014 48 sportster model ...LOVE IT
But.....I ran into an old riding budday and his wife on bike night ,we pulled up to each other and started to BS...left the bike running and before I knew it about 40 minutes had passed.
The bike sputtered, quit and white smoke came from under the gas tank.
Had the dealer come get it the next day and turns out the bike got so hot it caught fire in one og the wiring harnesses.
Now the bike needs to be completely re wired.
The bike has only 532 miles on it, and Harley is giving me crap about whether or not its covered under warranty.
I live in Florida and am a frequent visitor to Bike week in Daytona....for any whove gone you will be able to back up the fact that sometimes there are so many bikes there it is NOTHING to sit idling in traffic in 90 degree heat for 30-40 minute stretches.....Ive never had a problem with it...Or for that matter ever ridden with anyone whos had an issue.
Any thoughts on this?
Keep your mechanical / electrical options to yourself. You have given the dealer an out “I left it idling for ----“. If this hasn’t gone too far yet play dumb. “I am not a motorcycle mechanic and am a new rider / owner and was guessing at the cause”.
What may / probably have happened is the wiring harness was rubbed through due to vibrations and shorted out. What rubbed or caused this is HD’s problem unless you have made any mod’s or installed any electrical accessories.
I don’t mean to sound harsh or disrespectful, but don’t help HD get into your pocket.
