Took the bike out this weekend in the nice weather. Hopped on it to head home, turned the ignition with to "on" and everything lit up as usual. As soon as I hit the Start button, all the power shut off with a loud click. Turned the ignition switch off and back on but no power at all. Ended up getting towed home.
Removed and checked all fuses - all in tact. When I plugged in the Maxifuse (40 amp), I heard the power click on. I turned the ignition switch to "on" again and everything lit up like normal. As soon as I hit the start button, same result: Loud click and everything shuts off. Any idea on the problem here???
Replace the relays....can pick up non-harley relays at any auto part store. Also if you have a key fob....change the batteries in it. Will effect the starting sometimes. The main problem for me has been the relays.
Battery is in good shape and all contacts are tight (as far as I can tell).
A lot of times the ground strap to the frame/starter is overlooked, people just check the connections at the battery. If it's not right it can cause all kinds of strange things to happen.
Battery is relatively new and has always been on a trickle when not in use. I disconnected battery and reconnected. All wires appear to be tightened properly.
Went to HD earlier today and bought a new relay for $6. It was cheaper there than at Advance Auto Parts and I would have to wait for delivery at Advance. Took out the old starter relay and put in the new - started right up! Hoping this isn't a fluke, I'm gonna test it out again, close to home, once the weather gets nice again. I'm crossing my fingers...
