put a brace from where the carb bolts to the manafold to the top center case bolt. if you don't have a brace holding the carb and manafold you'll have nothing but intake leaks.

That's a little more elaborate brace than they had. A simple strap from the back of the air cleaner to a tappet bolt is what mine had stock. There's also a couple of bosses on the heads that some air cleaners bolted brackets to.

If the gas cap vent is clogged (even partially), you'll get fuel flow until a vacuum is created, such as higher speed running. It may flow enough at lower speeds to not be a problem, and fuel flow may "catch up" when you slow down for a couple of miles after an episode. Try the cap thing next time it happens. If it starts running right in a few seconds, that's the problem. If not, well, at least you checked.

Here's my air cleaner brace - it came with a round air cleaner kit, but I adapted it to my SE air cleaner back plate. It bolts to two tappet bolts and is pretty strong.

the mount for the brace is on the bottom near one of the push rods. Stud sticks up. Aftermarket filter has no where to mount, but i think i can fab up something and self tapper screw it into the bottom of the filter.

Will definately try the gas cap next time she acts up. Which hopefully she won't.

I also added a couple bolts in the holes at the end of the pipes. Was told I might need that little bit of back pressure.

My *** is too whooped to wrench tonight though.

little update.. been busy as hell, and haven't even gotten to ride the bike much. But I did manage to fab an air cleaner support bracket out of some flat stock aluminum I found at the hardware store. Only put on about 40 miles since then, but i can report no backfiring problem on that little ride. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]
